August 2024-A month of amazing fishing!

August has arrived, bringing with it some of the best fishing of the season and the fishing was legendary! Here’s a look at what’s been happening (or getting hooked) at Halley’s Camps this month.

Caribou Falls Landing

One of our long-time guests, Jim, has one of his original fishing towels from decades ago. Our guests love these complimentary towels that we hand out to all our guests. We have more on order for 2025!! We had fun fishing in August and the weather was beautiful! Chris, Amber and their son, Louis, even snuck out of camp for a couple of hours to fish with Chris’s grandfather that was visiting. Pictured here is Clarence and Chris having a great time visiting, catching fish and creating memories!

One Man Lake Lodge

Our spring guest, Jon, decided to try fishing in the warmer temps in August with his wife. WOW!! Jon has a new fishing partner. She mentioned she didn’t want to fish much but that soon changed after seeing all the fish! They now will have a new annual fishing trip together at One Man.

Dan and fishing partner, Joe, fished and they were walleye warriors with all his fish that they caught!

Some photos from One Man Lake Lodge this August-some food and look at the loons! There was a baby loon in the mix between the loon parents, but it kept hidden below the water’s surface. So much nature around and on the island!

Kettle Falls Lodge

What a great month here at Kettle-the weather has been beautiful and it’s just so great to see people having a great time! Fisherman, Kevin, returned to Kettle Falls after having a great trip in 2023. Kevin brought his wife, Jan, up to Kettle Falls for her first trip this year. Jan caught the largest fish between the 2 of them- a 43” northern pike! Kevin was excited for his wife but also for his 28” walleye.

Elissa and Bob decided to sneak in another trip to Halley’s before school started for their kids. Their fishing trip with their son was astounding as the number of fish that they caught was out of this world. Look at these photos!! Such beautiful fishing in September!!

Mary didn’t get the biggest out of her family trip, but she caught so many fish! Some trophies were caught by Mark 27” walleye, a 38.25” northern pike, Evan & Tristen both with a 27” walleye, KC with his 38” northern pike. Another great family trip we look forward to seeing them next year!

Best fishing trip EVER!! Al has been a Halley’s Camps guest for years and years and yet this year he said this was the best fishing year! A family trip, Al, Jake, Marcus, John & Benton had an amazing family fishing trip with their 14-trophy fish. Al started on day one with his 27.5” walleye with John also catching 27” & 27.5” walleye & Jake with his 27” walleye. Day 2, saw Al with another 27 .5” walleye. Day 3 also saw Al with another 27.5” walleye, John with 30” walleye & Benton with a 27” & 28” walleye. Day 4, Marcus caught a 27” walleye & 39.5” northern pike, John finished up the trip with his 38.5” northern pike and his 27” & 27.5” walleye.

Abby Dent, Women’s 8 Rowing Silver Olympic Medalist

Abby Dent came to Kettle Falls Lodge this August which was fun to celebrate her big win. Abby is looked at like a hometown hero in Kenora and Chris and Amber were thrilled to invite her and her family (that are from Kenora) to fly from Kenora to fish for the day. Both Abby’s family, the Halleys, and Kettle Falls Manager, Lisa and her daughter all went fishing and had a great shore lunch and enjoyed the rest of the day fishing and hanging out with everyone.

Fly in Outposts

Halley’s Fly-In Outpost locations continue to be a remote getaway for many anglers who return year after year! One such guest has been making Moosehorn his go-to destination since 2018, booking two trips a year to enjoy the peaceful beauty and incredible smallmouth bass fishing that keeps him coming back.

Meanwhile, another guest who visited one of our outposts in June couldn’t resist returning when a spot opened up at Trapline Lake Outpost in August. He was back for another 3 days of fishing for Trapline’s famous walleyes! Trapline remains a favorite among anglers seeking the stunning walleye fishing of Northwest Ontario. In fact, one group loved their experience so much, they booked their third annual trip before they even left this year!

Karl’s group at Trapline Lake had a fun time on their annual fishing trip at Halley’s Camps. Fishing, laughs and camaraderie were on their tasks completed at Trapline amongst these friends. They are booked in for next year and sadly one of their dear friends passed in the fall and will be remembered immensely.

Fishing Report:

August has been a month of exceptional fishing at Halley’s Camps. As the summer heat continues, our guests have been enjoying fantastic catches across the lake:

  • Walleye: Walleyes are now concentrated around deep points and humps, ranging from 14 to 25 feet of water. Anglers have been finding success with jig heads tipped with minnows or leeches. The deeper waters are proving to be a prime location for landing these sought-after fish.
  • Northern Pike: The pike are active in 10 to 20 feet of water, within the deep weeds. Guests have had great success using deeper crankbaits or live suckers to entice these powerful predators. The thrill of reeling in a big northern pike has been a highlight for many this month.
  • Bass: Bass fishing has also been excellent, with bass moving to 14 to 20 feet of water around rocky points and shelves. Deep diving crankbaits and ned rigs tipped with leeches have been the preferred baits, yielding impressive catches and exciting fights.

Continuing the cabin build at Dufault’s Island Outpost

  • New Default Cabin: Our new Default Cabin is being worked on-it’s been a work in progress during our busy summer months. All of the lumber was made out of trees last fall and due to the pine beetles, that were over abundant in 2023, we had to cut a few more trees to replace the boards the beetles got to, plane (sand) the new boards for rafters.

At the end of August, we’re gearing up for the start of our exciting fall bear hunting season. This is a fantastic time to hunt, as the bears are actively preparing for winter. We’re ready to offer another season of thrilling bear hunts and are eager to see the impressive trophies that come in. If you’re planning a fall bear hunt, now is the perfect time to book your trip and experience the excitement of the season. We had a majority of our hunters come in May and we have bear hunts as well as moose hunts in progress in September.

The fishing action in early September will continue with walleye, northern pike, and bass all providing excellent fishing. We’re looking forward to another busy month and welcoming new and returning guests.

Thank you for being a part of our vibrant fishing community.
